Bivio Networks and OISF Collaborate to Develop Next Generation Intrusion Detection Engine

Company’s Continuous Threat Monitoring Solution includes enhanced cyber security with Suricata

September 15, 2010, Pleasanton, Calif. — Bivio Networks, a leading provider of network systems for securing, monitoring and controlling network infrastructures, today announced its participation in the Open Source Information Security Foundation (OISF) Suricata Project. The project, a non-profit initiative funded by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and a multinational group of networking vendors, systems integrators and managed security organizations, is developing an open source engine capable of performing real-time analysis on network traffic to detect suspicious probes, intrusions and attacks.

“Network attacks are more prevalent and pernicious than ever, so making networks more resilient against attack is the challenge of our times,” said Dr. Elan Amir, president and CEO of Bivio Networks. “We are honored to contribute our time, equipment and expertise to develop, in collaboration with OISF’s other industry partners, advanced intrusion detection solutions to protect critical federal and enterprise infrastructures.”

The Suricata engine features a multi-threaded architecture designed to support high performance multi-core and multi-processer systems. The engine is IPv6-enabled and has distributed blocking and behavior-based recognition capabilities. Bivio Networks has included the engine in its multi-service Continuous Threat Monitoring Solution (CTMS) to deliver industry leading cyber security performance and functionality.

As one of the OISF consortium’s earliest partners, Bivio contributed a Bivio 7000 series deep packet inspection (DPI) application platform, as well as the time and input of its developers to support the research and development of what will be the world's most advanced open source intrusion detection system (IDS)/intrusion prevention system (IPS). Bivio’s involvement in the Suricata Project further illustrates its comprehensive approach to cyber security, which includes continuous threat monitoring (CTMS), content control and other capabilities.

“The Suricata Project depends on the expertise of and collective efforts of industry partners like Bivio Networks,” said Matt Jonkman, OISF president. “With more than two dozen partner organizations from around the world, the Suricata Project embodies a shared interest in developing tools and technologies to mitigate the network threats facing us today and tomorrow.”

Bivio CTMS capabilities have been deployed globally in network throughputs ranging from sub-Gigabit through over 10 Gbps and is available now.
